1. OECD Trends Shaping Education 2019

OECD - January 21, 2019

Did you ever wonder whether education has a role to play in preparing our societies for an age of artificial intelligence? Or what the impact of climate change might be on our schools, families and communities? Trends Shaping Education examines major economic, political, social and technological trends affecting education.  While the trends are robust, the questions raised in this book are suggestive, and aim to inform strategic thinking and stimulate reflection on the challenges facing education – and on how and whether education can influence these trends. This book covers a rich array of topics related to globalisation, democracy, security, ageing and modern cultures.

2. Provincial neighbours show the way to a better Saskatchewan education system
TODD MACKAY Updated: January 23, 2019

If Saskatchewan looks at its neighbours, there are opportunities for us to strengthen our education system while shrinking the bill we’re leaving to our kids to pay for it.

First, here’s some important context: Canada has one of the highest ranked education systems in the world, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. However, here in Saskatchewan, we also have to be honest about something: Within Canada’s high-performing system, Saskatchewan is behind other provinces.

Saskatchewan’s education system ranked below the Canadian average and got a D from the Conference Board of Canada a few years ago.

3. Book bunny fostering critical ‘soft skills’ for Cardinal Newman kids
Niagara This Week: January 25, 2019

Niagara Falls school’s rabbit initiative needs online votes this week as part of international competition

He couldn't differentiate between adding two plus two and the Pythagorean Theorem, and he hasn't even heard of Shakespeare or Yeats, but that isn't stopping Eddie Newman from becoming a powerful teaching force at Cardinal Newman Catholic Elementary School in Niagara Falls.

4Employment gap narrows between university-educated immigrants and Canadian-born counterparts
The Star - Jan. 18, 2019

The unemployment gap between university-educated immigrants and their Canadian counterparts in the Greater Toronto Area has narrowed over the past two decades, but employers’ demands for Canadian job experience remain a key barrier for newcomers, a new study has found.

In 2001, newcomers with at least a bachelor’s degree had an unemployment rate 3.85 times higher than that of their Canadian-born peers, but by 2016, this had dropped to only 2.4 times greater, according to the report commissioned by the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC).

5. Upskilling Canadian Youth Through Project-Based Learning
By Viet Hoang   January 25, 2019

ICTC and Riipen partner to integrate project-based business skills learning for grades 6-12.

Today, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) is pleased to announce a partnership agreement with Riipen, North America’s largest marketplace, that connects industry with educators to enable real-world learning experiences. Riipen’s secure web-based platform will include an ICTC Business Skills portal that will connect students, educators and industry through project-based learning experiences. Student teams will sign in and have the opportunity to work together to solve business challenges submitted to the platform by industry. Introducing business skills challenges at the middle and secondary school level will engage students earlier on, helping them acquire hands-on experience and develop confidence at an even younger age.

6. Bett Show 2018 Highlights

EXCEL LONDON - JANUARY 23 - 26, 2019

What a great show it’s been…a buzzing atmosphere, thought provoking sessions and most of all powerful conversations into what the future of the education holds. We’ve heard from Rt Hon Anne Milton MP who opened Bett 2018, Bill Rankin, Lord Adonis, Baroness Beeban Kidron, Helen Skelton, Natasha Kaplinsky and many other dynamic speakers.

7Public funding for private schools saves money

January 18, 2019

I disagree with comments made by W. Hatton on private school funding, as other provinces continue with private school funding, regardless of what political party is the government.

B.C. gives 35 per cent to 50 per cent of the public school grant to private schools, Alberta 60 to 70 per cent, Saskatchewan 50 to 80 per cent, Manitoba 50 per cent, and Quebec 60 per cent. Anyone who says taxpayers subsidize private schools is wrong on the arithmetic. Far from being subsidized, independent schools offer discounts to taxpayers to educate Canadian students. The math is not complex, to bring all the students enrolled in private schools, into the public education system would cost more, not less. Taxpayers would immediately fund each student at the 100 per cent.

8. To Support US Expansion, Byju’s Acquires Learning Games Startup Osmo for $120M
 Jan 17, 2019

BYJU’S BIG BET: Indian education company Byju’s has acquired Osmo, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based startup that sells educational games for kids, for $120 million, TechCrunch reports. The deal comes less than a month after Byju’s announced it had
raised $540 million in funding.

Byju’s, founded in 2008 and based in Bangalore, launched as a tutoring service and expanded in 2015 to offer a mobile app. Its recent fundraise, which gave the company a $3.6 billion valuation, will allow Byju’s to expand its global reach and introduce English-language classes to younger children, ages 3-8. Byju’s courses are currently available for grades 4-12. In its press release, the company claims it is “on target to triple its revenue” to $250 million this year.

9. International Day of Education
January 24, 2019

Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education(link is external), in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.

10. Global Education Technology Market to Reach $341B by 2025
Jan 24, 2018

Global education market intelligence firm, HolonIQ, released its 2019 Global Education Outlook today in London at the global education conference Learnit. HolonIQ’s outlook includes key market estimates for 2025, critical trend and policy analysis, and assessments on the potential impact from new technologies. The Outlook includes global data demonstrating that even with impressive 11% annual growth, today’s Education Industry will leave 500 million students behind without serious and immediate transformation.

The Outlook finds a grossly under-digitized industry (less than 3% of expenditure), unable to scale and meet the needs of an additional 500 million students around the world by 2025. The half a billion un-served students represent a critical source of human capital for global growth – for developing and developed economies alike. A protracted decline in public funding and ongoing political instability, are producing a significant delay in both reform and innovation policy from many governments around the world.
