Spamhaus Domain Block List Nearly a Perfect

The Domain Block List (DBL) created by the Spamhaus Project, is releasing its new spam-blocking advisory list to its domain users. The DBL has been beta tested during 2009 in Europe, Asia and North America, with great success. This version has enhanced spam protection without false positives, and it is ready for application in production spam filter systems.

Microsoft Halts Spam Botnet Waledac

Microsoft put on its spy glasses when it investigated Operation b49, otherwise known as Waledac. Waledac was an international internet spam bot infecting hundreds of thousands of consumers worldwide. If this number of people who have been infected by the viruses rampant on the internet sounds big, it is. This is a huge number of people who are affected by this scam. It is thought to be developed by criminals, intent on sending possibly 1.5 billion spam emails daily from internet domains like discountfreesms.com. In a bold move, Microsoft filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia against 27 anonymous criminals, seeking injunctive relief in the form of a temporary restraining order for over 270 domains.

Government Joins War Against Spammers

The government is waging a real war against spammers. It has become impatient with spammers from countries like New Zealand, who are using their unlimited resources to fill emails and cellular telephone inboxes with spam.
Any business using anti-spam laws will be given a formal warning from the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). It is illegal to send emails or text messages within New Zealand if there is no consent from the consumer receiving the email. Within the past year, there have been almost 2000 complains with the DIA regarding unsolicited emails that have been received by the consumers who use the internet. Emails sent by family and friends are not covered by this anti-spamming legislation. The DIA has received 143 complaints about spam and 1841 complaints about emails.

Two highly profiled attacks on email marketing services were recently performed by hackers. These services are Aweber and iContact, and each was hit within 30 days of each other. Both are email marketing services providing business solutions to online businesses and websites. Professional email marketing is a legitimate business, and worth the marketing dollars allocated by businesses interested in utilizing the internet for marketing purposes to lure customers.

Tagged Caught Duping Users with Email Addresses of Friends

Social network site Tagged was caught duping users into revealing the email addresses of their friends. Most people who used the social networking site signed up, then added the addresses of their friends as a way to keep in touch with them. The company found a way to get extensive email listings from users, by pretending to send emails to the friends of those users. The users were not aware that their listings were being used in this way, and Tagged was found out to have acted unprofessionally by abusing the users trust on this issue.
